O rodapé da página 163 de "A Supposedly Fun Thing I´ll Never Do Again", de David Foster Wallace, contém uma das leis douradas da existência humana. É um comentário colateral num texto sobre o David Lynch, mas tem a força das grandes constantes da natureza, como o pi ou a regra 20/80 (vinte por cento das pessoas em uma empresa fazem oitenta por cento do trabalho duro, vinte por cento dos criminosos de uma cidade são responsáveis por oitenta por cento dos crimes e assim por diante). Eis a frase:

(and as aside, but a true aside, I´ll ad that I have had since 1986 a personal rule w/r/t dating, which is that any date where I got to a female´s residence to pick her up and have any kind of conversation with parents or roomates that´s an even remotely Lynchian conversation is automatically the only date I ever have with this female, regardless of her appeal in other areas. No começo, meu primeiro impulso foi de achar a atitude em si um tanto quanto maricas, mas refletindo um pouco e relembrando alguns casos, e depois relembrando vários casos, cheguei à conclusão de que é um enunciado tão certo quanto a lei da gravidade, talvez até um pouco mais.

O curioso é que todo mundo deve achar ele, Foster Wallace, meio lynchiano.
