David Foster Wallace conta à Salon qual a primeira história que o fez querer virar escritor. Foi The Balloon, de Donald Barthelme. Este escreveu contos que já foram chamados de "ficção incidental" por optarem, como em um filme de Robert Altman, por situações, não histórias com uma trama completa. Ele e Foster Wallace têm mesmo muito a ver.

Os detratores definiam a obra de Barthelme como superficial ou destituída de sentido enquanto as críticas mais positivas a chamam de sátira metafísica. Tudo o que li dele na Internet – 60 stories está sempre na lista de livros para comprar futuramente – me coloca no segundo grupo. Os contos têm um humor melancólico que tanto produziu The Balloon como meus favoritos, Me and mrs. Mandible e, principalmente, The Zombies, com sua abertura de gênio:

"In a high wind the leaves fall from the trees. The zombies are standing about talking. "Beautiful day!" "Certainly is!" The zombies have come to buy wives from the people of this village, the only village around that will sell wives to zombies. "Beautiful day!" "Certainly is!" The zombies have brought many cattle. The bride price to a zombie is exactly twice that asked of an ordinary man. The cattle are also zombies and the zombies are in terror lest the people of the village understand this".
